她想說「如果你得不到你想要的男人」。對待他奉送的禮物，斯佳麗顯出輕蔑的態度，這可把傑拉爾德惹惱了。因為除了埃倫，這是他在世上最熱愛的東西，於是他忍不住吼叫起來。

「你在這兒，斯佳麗·奧哈拉，就是要告訴我，塔拉——這土地——值不了什麼嗎？」

斯佳麗倔強地點了點頭。她心裏過於痛苦，已經不在乎會不會惹爸爸生氣了。

「難道我為此感到過羞恥嗎？沒有，我為此感到驕傲。別忘了，你是半個愛爾蘭人，小姐！每一個有一絲愛爾蘭血統的人，都會把供養他生活的土地看作他的母親。我現在真替你害臊。我拿世上最美的土地給你——除了老家米斯郡的土地——可你怎麼着？居然不屑一顧！」

「這世上就數土地有價值。」他喊道，氣得把兩條又粗又短的胳膊在空中亂擺，「只有土地能長久，你要記住！只有土地值得人為它努力、為它奮鬥——為它獻身。」

「哦，爸爸，」她反感地說，「你這話說得真像個愛爾蘭人。」

傑拉爾德越說越來氣，罵得來了勁，可是見斯佳麗愁眉苦臉，他覺察出了什麼，便停了下來。

「不過，你還年輕，會慢慢愛上這塊土地的。一旦愛上就擺不脫了，愛爾蘭人都是這樣的。你還是個孩子，就知道為那些小夥子傷腦筋。等你年紀大些了，就會明白這是……現在就看你能不能拿定主意，是凱德，還是那對孿生兄弟，還是埃文·芒羅家的子弟。要是這幾個裏頭選中了的話，你就瞧著吧，我要讓你嫁得風風光光！」

「噢，爸！」

到這會兒，傑拉爾德已經煩透了，不想再談下去了。這事落到了自己肩膀上，讓他好傷腦筋。另外，他列舉了全縣最出色的年輕人，還提出要把塔拉送她，她還是那麼一臉憂傷，這也叫他傷心。傑拉爾德總希望自己送了禮物，人家會高興得拍手、親吻他。

「好了，別再噘嘴了，小姐。要緊的不是跟誰結婚，而是對方要和你情投意合，是個紳士，是南方人，是體面人。對女人來說，結了婚以後才有愛情。」

「噢，爸，那是過時的愛爾蘭老觀念！」

「可這是好觀念！美國這些為愛情結婚的玩意兒，簡直像僕人，像北佬！最好的婚姻就是父母給女兒包辦的婚姻。因為像你這樣的傻丫頭怎麼會分得清哪個是好人，哪個是壞蛋呢？你瞧瞧韋爾克斯家的人吧。都這麼多代了，人家還是那麼強盛，這是為什麼呢？瞧，就是因為總跟他們那同一類人結婚，總按家裏人的意願跟表親結婚。」
