THEMILITARYESTABLISHMENT

ButthecompleteRomanlegion,initsownpeculiarcohorts,swithinitselftheheavy－armedfoot,thatis:theprincipes,hastati,triarii,andantef,thelightarmedfoot,consisftheferentarii,archers,slingers,andbalistarii,sebodies,alledwiththesamespirit,areunitedinseparablyintheirvariousdispossforforming,sthelescompdperfellitspartsand,withyforeignassistance,Rreatnessisaproofoftheexcellenceoftheirlegions,forwiththemtheyalwaysdefeatedwhatevernumbersoftheenemytheythoughtfit,ortheircircumstancesgavethemanopporytoengage.

SESOFDECAYOFTHELEGION

Thenameofthelegionremainsindeedtothisdayinourarmies,butitsstrengthandsubstancearegone,sincebytheneglectofourpredecessors,honorsandpreferments,whichwereformerlytherecompensesofmeritandlongservices,eisnolongertakentoreplacethesoldiers,whoafterservingtheirfulltime,vesllyhappeningbysickness,discharges,deserdvariousothercasualties,ifnotsuppliedeveryyearoreveneverymonth,thercauseoftheweaknessofourlegionsisthhemthesoldiersfindthedutyhard,thearmsheavy,voidtheseveniences,theyenenlistintheauxiliaries,wheretheserviceislesslaboriousandtheyhavereasontoexpectmorespeedyrecompenses.
