埃倫年方三十二，可是按她那個時代的標準，她已經算是中年婦女了，已經生過六個孩子，埋葬過不幸夭折的三個。她身材頎長，比她那脾氣暴躁的小個子丈夫高出一頭，但她走起路來步態優雅，長裙飄逸，所以高身材倒也並不特別顯眼。她的塔夫綢上衣領口上方露出的脖頸圓而細長，呈奶油色，似乎總是被那綰在腦後髮網中的濃密頭髮壓得略向後仰。她母親是法國人，父親曾是拿破崙手下的一名士兵，外公外婆原來住在海地，一七九一年海地革命時從那裏逃走。她從母親那裏繼承了一頭烏黑的頭髮和一雙丹鳳黑眼睛，隱蔽在烏黑的睫毛後面；從父親那裏繼承了又長又直的鼻子和稜角分明的方形下巴，但與柔美的臉頰弧線搭配起來，顯得柔和自然。然而只有在生活中，她的面容上才生出了一種並非傲慢的傲岸神態，一種寬厚、一種憂鬱，還有那種絕對的不苟言笑。

要是她眼睛裏放出一些光彩，微笑時含有一些相應的熱情，或者是聲音自然一些，語調動聽一些，讓家人和僕人聽着舒服一些。她本來會成為一個絕代佳人，她說話帶有喬治亞海邊居民的口音，柔和而圓潤，母音清晰，輔音親切，摻有一丁點兒法國口音。這是一個從來不提高的聲音，不管是對僕人發號施令，還是訓斥孩子，但這是一個在塔拉人人都會立即服從的聲音，而在這裏，她丈夫的咆哮吼叫，大家卻默默地不予理睬。

斯佳麗從來沒有見過母親有心煩意亂的時候，從來都是那麼心平氣和，無論白天還是晚上，她自己總是穿戴得十全十美。要是埃倫去參加舞會、去會客，或者是在開庭日去瓊斯博羅旁聽，往往需要花上兩個鐘頭由黑媽媽外加兩個女用人共同為她梳妝穿戴，才能讓她滿意地出門；但是在緊急時刻，她穿戴梳妝之快卻又令人吃驚。
